Take the blue sky arching overhead, mix it with the excitement of working in the moment, add some brushes or sculpting tools and a heaping dose of talent, and what do you get? The Sixth Annual Canyon Road Paint-out comes to mind, a plein air extravaganza unique to our riverside neighborhood.
The concept of working “en plein air” is essentially a simple one – it requires the artist to work on-site, outdoors in the elements, such as they are. While the idea seems straightforward, much is riding on the effort. How cool or warm is the air? Weather can dramatically affect the behavior of the paint. Is the sun shining or is it ducking in and out behind the clouds all day? A work-in-progress might experience dramatic shifts as light plays hide-and-seek with the subject matter. And those clouds, they can change in moments from serene to threatening, so working quickly and intuitively is key to achieving results.
On Friday and Saturday, October 18-19, Canyon Road opens her heart to a special day of strolling and gallery-hopping, as artists from all over the city choose choice spots along the street to participate in this two-day community event….and the best part is that we’re all invited to watch, listen and learn. Given the scenic nature of our neighborhood, evocative landscapes will no doubt take shape, in intimate vignettes, panoramic views and everything in-between. Some artists bring their own models, and it’s possible to see a pack of patient burros idly munching on a snack as their portrait comes to life in brilliant color. The click of active camera shutters is an open invitation to position oneself in the same spot as a fine-art photographer to see what ensues on one’s own camera roll. Fertile imagination and inspiration will be on display in the creative communal atmosphere, as artists share skills, stories and space on this historic street.
Formal hours for the Paint-out are 10am-4pm, but some will likely come early and others stay late to capture the legend light of New Mexico. A series of Friday night openings ease Santa Fe into evening and provide a gallery setting to speak to individual artisans about their work and methodology and find out who is set up where. Special events on Saturday include a festive noontime parade, followed by performances from students enrolled in the Santa Public Schools Music Education program and a 2pm round-table discussion on Abstract Art at New Concept Gallery.
Creativity at the Teahouse flows direct from our lively kitchen, and we’re here daily from 9am-9m to share our culinary talents. Our breakfast selections (including gluten-free options) can be enjoyed before a Paint-out stroll as morning’s chill is dissipating and are available all day on Saturdays and Sundays. The kettle is always on for our 100+ varieties of tea, and lunch can fuel another gallery-laden go-round. Or let the day draw to its picturesque end with a relaxing dinner and a glass of wine at the Teahouse. You’re invited to share the artistic bounty of our neighborhood during this uniquely Santa Fe event, yet another reason we give thanks for being part of the vibrant Canyon Road community.
